Does everyone hate financial advisors? 2024-04-26T22:10:38+00:00 88 investing
  • They think it's as easy as dump it all in VTI - which for most people is usually a good idea until they get close to retirement, that's when the real work comes in.
  • The US stock market has been great for the last 15ish years so it's been easy to just pump it all into a VOO and forget about it because most people this site are young and don't really have to worry about much and didn't live through the crash back around 2008.
  • I can go on forever about Reddit and the real world but just keep this in mind: If you actually give a shit about your clients and do your best to take care of them.
  • I think what you see on Reddit is people who are in the top tier of "investment education" and they really don't understand that it's worth it for a 75 year old lady to pay us to make sure she's safe for the next 20 years.
  • Don't pay attention to Reddit users and their hate for FAs most don't have the assets needed for a real FA to manage their finances.

  • I sold sofi at a $1000 loss when it was in the 6$, would have made $6000 if I held.
  • lost another 2k on AMZN calls when they went fucking nowhere, now $230
  • After all that, I decided the easiest way to regroup losses was to put 40 grand into VTI and chill.

  • Once you hit that, then you can afford to gamble with options and only risk a max 5% of your account.
  • Dude, 99% of people fail at day trading/options long term.
  • Get yourself first to financial security with 6 month emergency fund, maxing out 401k, Roth, or just put 15% of your paycheck in a brokerage account and buy VOO or VTI.

Down jones down 1100 points and I just bought 20K worth of VTI. Good or bad choice? 2024-12-19T02:15:26+00:00 2 investing
  • It's an excellent choice to buy every week or month or whatever, on a recurring basis, over multiple decades.
  • Being consistent and diversified over multiple decades is the winner.
  • VTI is a great piece of that puzzle.
Should I continue investing in SCHD?? 2024-12-13T07:32:51+00:00 7 stocks
  • Start buying QQQM and VOO if you want more growth, and sprinkle in some VT or VXUS.
  • Started buying in July... 5 months in at $160 total and you are chasing growth to buy 0.5 shares of VTI....you aren't even in long term capital gains territory yet.
  • I am guessing you are fairly young based off this question.
Investing a very small amount of money? 2024-12-09T14:20:14+00:00 28 investing
  • Either a high yield savings account or a bond etf like SGOV.
  • Do this with whatever money you have until you've got ~6 months of expenses (not salary, expenses) built up.
  • After that, max out retirement benefits.
  • After that, pick a single ETF (VOO, VTI, VT or equivalent) to invest the rest into.
  • If you have very little money, you'd be best served keeping it in something essentially risk-free with a bit of interest for an emergency fund.

  • I don't know man, I jumped on that *BUY IWM* trend on the two days where it decides to tank and my calls are expiring worthless
  • Meanwhile, I sold covers on both DGRO 7/19 at $58 (it's now above $60), and DVY 7/19 $122 (it's trending towards $130).

  • I also hold most of my investments in VOO and VTI, but I bought a nice chunk of NVDA in 2018, sold my initial stake, bought two cars, and I'm still up like 500%.
  • And I admit I got lucky on NVDA (although it wasn't a lark of a buy, I had done my research), I just don't think doom and gloom is justified yet.

  • Two people investing 1 million dollars 10 years ago and the person using OEF would be 75K wealthier.
  • For example, using Vanguards ETF comparison tool, it shows OEF's 10 year return outperformed VOO 14.08% to 13.33%, annualized.
  • Thats a ridiculous 8.8% greater cumulative return being in OEF over a 5 year period compared to VOO.
  • In terms of cumulative returns, OEF outperformed VOO by 7.5% over the 10 year stretch.
  • OEF (iShares S&P 100) has been my go to ETF for the last 5 years and I feel stronger about it now than ever before.

  • Many indexes already include Nvidia.
  • Start with an index like VTI or VOO and stick with that for a while.
  • While I respect your desire to learn about investing, where you are now, you are the perfect candidate for index investing.
  • What you're doing now is going to lead to emotional decisions since you don't have clue about how to evaluate companies and will just read news articles designed to sell you on get rich quick schemes and emotions.

43F single parent: I'm currently contributing 11% to QQQ and 9% to my 401k, should I reverse my strategy? 2024-12-12T02:27:39+00:00 54 investing
  • You should also take advantage of a roth ira, which won't help your taxes in the present, but will grow tax free into retirement.
  • The msx contribution is aroujd 7.5k per year, and if your income is too high you can do the backdoor roth method (Google how to do it, it's fairly straightforward).
  • Finally if you have excess cash then invest in VTI or VOO
  • The 401k will grow tax free, as well as reduce your taxable income in the present (so you'll get a bigger tax refund at the end of the year).
  • So if you are not close to hitting this number, make sure you increase your contribution next year so as to hit it by the end of the year.

BRK-B or Betterment? 2024-12-13T07:35:27+00:00 6 stocks
  • I would dump that account, get a normal brokerage, and buy some broad index funds.
  • Brkb is a solid company to have money in and does well compared to the overall market in bad times because the companies within its umbrella are more recession proof than many companies, and are also lead by buffet who a lot of people just have confidence in.
  • Like VOO or VTI, and BRKB is still good to own.
  • Who knows what companies your betterment account holds, but obviously it's not beating SPY or BRK.
  • These fintech companies like betterment make money by charging fees, not by beating the market.
