Why invest in MSTR instead of directly buying BTC?

You'd be betting on their ability to keep using their access to credit markets to acquire BTC more efficiently than you otherwise could, increase BTC per share, and eventually do something interesting with their massive holdings as BTC adoption matures. I think they'll probably do very well and could have some upside vs BTC. But I also think it's a very different risk profile. Where BTC is a bearer asset with basically no counterparty risk, MSTR is very reliant on Saylor continuing to make good decisions and staying solvent. God knows what happens if Saylor dies and gets replaced with some random suit.

  • No one in the world is betting on Bitcoin to generate such economic value that the asset pays something akin to a dividend.
  • But none of those reasons are anything other than price speculations, as none of those things actually drive economic activity.
  • Outside of the technical issues that trying to do massive amounts of transactions on the bitcoin block chain has, the simple truth is the reason it's a good speculation is the exact same reason it's a terrible currency.
  • If you believe the price of a Bitcoin will go to 120-150k sometime in 2025 why would you liquidate your holdings for another asset that won't appreciate as quickly?
  • On the reverse end of the equation, if you don't believe in crypto/BTC why would you accept as payment, as it could easily drop to 50-70k in 2025 and now your out a significant amount of value.

  • I would say if you want exposure to bitcoin, just set up an automated transfer on a reputable exchange like Coinbase and buy the bitcoin straight up.
  • The only reason anyone should hold a BTC ETF that I can see is to gain exposure within tax protected accounts.

  • Yes, you're correct that Bitcoin is a public ledger and transactions are traceable, but that's exactly what sets it apart from truly anonymous methods of moving money, like cash or gold.
  • That's why cash USD payments are used far more for illicit activites than BTC because they're entirely untraceable and anonymous.
  • And sure, governments can monitor Bitcoin, but they can't control it or seize it without access to private keys, unlike fiat currencies in bank accounts, which can be frozen instantly.
  • It protects against arbitrary restrictions, such as in countries where governments freeze bank accounts, impose capital controls, or steal from their citizens through hyper inflation.
  • While compliance with laws is necessary in jurisdictions with enforcement power, Bitcoin ensures that individuals have the option to retain control over their assets in systems prone to instability or abuse, making it much more than a tool for evasion.
