Bonds vs Managed Futures + Tail Hedge 2 0.836 investing

I am a big trend follow proponent so my proposed trend weight tends to be very high using Return sta...

  • Trend following requires large sustained price movement to change its positioning.
  • You are also only getting the excess return after a large amount of transaction cost and management fee.
  • EDV (which probably closer to 70% ZROZSIM 30% TLTSIM) on the other hand has just 0.05% MER, with a lot more convexity in 2008-2020 than DBMFSIM.
  • Of course you can claim it's historical luck as 1980-2022 bond bull market and 2000-2026 gold bull market, but Trend, as a risk premia, also has its lucky and unlucky periods.
  • I would argue a long-flat trend of long term treasury, and static gold allocation, have some value in improving ballast performances because trend usually can't predict flight to safe haven behaviors.

  • My taxable is down $90k all time making bets like people do here, while my retirement accounts have 20-30% lifetime annual returns based on what I'm going to tell you now, and what's become my only strategy because everything else squanders money.
  • - Compensated vs uncompensated risk (individual stocks are more volatile and risky for no structural reason benefit, it's gambling and you don't have an edge.
  • M1 finance is the best brokerage for making the first point automatic imo, while fidelity/schwab have better execution that consistently saves a few hundredths of a percent per order.
  • If you want a fun, exciting portfolio and to learn early on what your risk tolerance is, try out 50% UPRO, 25% UGL, 25% CTA.
  • I believe Dimensional knows what they're doing and have funds like DFAX, DFUS, DISV, DFSV as my core equity holdings in retirement accounts.

  • I'm still fairly defensive with a large healthcare tranche for the midterm rally.
  • I have some energy, a long term call on CRAK that's been printing, i have some GLD.
  • If the AI trade can hold up I'll begin adding again.
  • A lot of names in agentic security are too pricey - i think sailpoint could 5x or get acquired

  • I don't see the point of using option based tail hedge if your portfolio beta is <1 because the long puts never adds to your return, unlike Managed Futures or Bonds that have positive expected return.
  • In fact I don't think you ever need it unless your risk level is so situationally unaware like few bad months away from liquidation.
  • Some combination of managed futures, long term treasury and gold, like 20% MF 10% EDV 10% GLD would be what I consider a decent all weather ballast.
