  • They were a diversified company with great fundamentals and an unbreakable moat.
  • GE sold off a lot of the stuff that made them diversified.
  • Ok, hypothetical: what if they spun off their cloud business (high margin) as a separate company?
  • Shareholders would get some stock of each but the nature of AMZN's dominance would change.

  • Our wildly unprofitable AI Labs have decided they can't sell tokens for 10% of COGS without going bankrupt.
  • Musk's own AI Lab (xAI, now SpaceX) is an unmitigated disaster, so he knows what's happening.
  • In fact, Musk's AI business is failing so badly that he was forced to rent out his beloved Colossus data center because of "excess capacity."
  • OpenAI and Anthropic are responsible for 80% of compute demand, and they are hemorrhaging cash and headed for bankruptcy.
  • The other 20% of compute demand has come largely from META, which just announced that it also needs to rent out its (substantial) excess capacity.

  • Over spending and over extending itself into the AI infrastructure race with products nobody wants.
  • Seems pretty clear that the extra compute is due to low demand for their specific models rather than low demand in the inference space in general.
  • I have no positions in META, but if this thing pumps back to +25 PE in the coming months, there may be a great opportunity to short.

Wow! This whole sub and comment section is one of the best I've seen in over a year - well done ever...

  • IMO, a lot of what happened the last two days (notably the first 2 days of the second half of the year), is a lot of profit taking on stocks that went parabolic going into the long weekend and Summer.
  • Also, the META announcement was more of a warning shot for the AI Infrastructure buildout Co's (ie.
  • I think it was a great move by META 'cause you gotta get SOMETHING for all that spend you've done and the spend you've projected while you continue on.
  • To that point, Memory stocks are reactionary.
  • The huge spend is still happening, and is going to continue for at least the rest of the year.

  • The difference is that I'm not blinded by the illusion of infinite growth just because of some trend you saw on Instagram or TikTok.
  • Hardware is fundamentally cyclical due to obvious energy, demand, and cost constraints.
  • You always need to advertise, which is exactly why GOOG and META are fundamentally non-cyclical businesses.
  • I work as a software engineer, and I can tell you that token cost has dramatically increased, which makes companies be more careful with AI spending.

  • What happened is META announced they're selling "excess compute" into the market by starting a cloud biz.
  • Since Meta didn't have a cloud biz like the other hyperscalers, the massive spend on capex for AI was far more worrying because what were they gonna do with all those chips if their AI play ended up being another, ahem, Meta.
  • 1) Gave everyone a release valve on the question of "where does that capex go to get profit if your AI sucks", BUT in their announcement they said they're selling excess compute, and for the last 2-3 years the story behind the AI boom was based on the assumption that compute demand would be endless.
  • 2) maybe the demand for compute isn't endless, and not only that, if META can't figure out how to use AI to make money yet in this way, the overwhelming burden of expenditures on AI infrastructure start to look less reasonable.
  • If 2 comes to pass, it means Nvidia+MU+TSMC+Coreweave+IREN+any number of other investments in the stack of "next choke point" investments around AI stand t

  • META goes up 10% on the promise that they're going to do exactly what MSFT, AMZN, and GOOGL are doing with renting out AI data center capacity?
  • The very same strategy, that MSFT is getting their ass reamed out for, for reckless spending?
  • So META thinks they can catch the big 3 cloud computers, that have had like a decade head start.
  • AND they think they can do it at a cost that won't have the market dropping their stock like a bad habit?

  • I believe they said unused capacity can be used as an income stream.
  • But there will be an eventual end to the AI buildout and could affect downstream companies.
  • OTOH, we don't know what the upgrade cycle looks like.
