Don't Time the Market, Bah! 1 0.978 stocks

Imo don't time the market is talking about "the market" as in broad index funds. You don't time VTI,...

  • Probably, sure maybe you miss out on gains but 99/100 times that company will under perform over 5+ years.
  • For example I LOVE RKLB, I'm up over 2600%, they are putting out so much good news and making great acquisitions.
  • But god damn it's getting hard to hold as it gets near 100x sales.
  • So I'm def debating on selling 1/3 of my position to lock in gains.
  • But I made 3x my cost basis back when I sold at $20
"Diversify across 20-30 stocks" is advice I hear constantly, but nobody actually explains how to land on your number. 1 0.8554 stocks

  • Like VOO, VTI, VT, VXUS.
  • Then in another account that you would like to place some money into and manage I would say worry less about diversifying and more about accumulating positions at deliberate times based on company performance.
  • 1st year you might be 100% indexes dca-ing then when a great individual stock on your watchlist plummets in a sell off then go shopping.
  • Over the course of 10 years you will ideally have been building a large base of indexes and have a dozen to two dozen individual stocks you know really well.
  • For me I've DCA into VOO but bought the likes of GOOG, RDDT, MSFT, FSLR, JPM, URI, RKLB, LLY, WM on dips I believed were over reacting.

  • Going from 5 large/mega cap stocks to VOO or VTI or VT is already a major diversification.

  • VT includes both US and international but weighed by market cap so some people prefer to allocate their exposure themselves with VTI + VXUS.
  • International is traditionally about raising diversification while reducing risk from country concentration.

What's a niche/theme that deserves its own ETF, but still doesn't have a good one? 2 0.9522 investing

  • When I say "thesis", it's more that I find it hard to invest in the most valuable company in the history of humanity expecting more growth.
  • I fully admit I could be wrong - either about the fundamentals, or my understanding of how finance works in general.
  • Or I could be right and the market could just continue to irrationally increase the price of a company divorced from its fundamentals.
  • I'm not saying NVidia is like that - they're clearly an extremely innovative company that sells a product that has an astronomical demand and that no one else can replicate.
  • I just plan to keep investing monthly in VTI, VB, VXUS, and my silly little joke ETF in order to diversify.

  • I took some profits off RKLB and ASTS on Friday (looks like I should have waited till today) and dropped it into VT and working towards the "chill" part of that process.
E*Trade offers 5 Zero fee Index mutual funds! 1 0.9836 investing

They look perfectly fine, but I wouldn't switch just because the expense ratio is 0.00%. ETTOX and E...

  • ETTOX and ETISX are essentially E\*Trade's answer to Fidelity's zero-fee funds, and they're managed by Morgan Stanley Investment Management.
  • Like Fidelity's ZERO funds, these are proprietary mutual funds, so if you ever leave E\*Trade you may need to sell rather than transfer in kind, which could create a taxable event in a brokerage account.
  • That matters more than saving 0.03% versus something like VTI or VXUS.
  • If you're already happy at E\*Trade and investing in tax-advantaged accounts, they're a solid option.

  • If I had $50k at 24/25/26, with the knowledge I have as a 30-year-old, I would put myself back through college (I had a scholarship and could probably get even better grants today, so there would be money left over) OR I would have invested $40k into stocks--specifically South Korea and QQQ and VT (or things like that) and kept a solid job.
  • If I kept the job, I would routinely put money into Roth IRAs and make sure my job had a 401k set up.
  • It would be all about getting the majority of that money into either stocks or education and also keeping money coming in/pursuing a degree.

If you had $7.5k to invest tomorrow, what would you do in this current market? 3 0.886 stocks

Avoid any speculative "Reddit stocks" like space, flying cars, or ev companies. I'd stick with AMZ...

  • I'd stick with AMZN: best mag 7 IMO for stable growth- read about everything their business entails from brick & mortal retail (Whole Foods), to logistics (their entry into this caused FedEx and UPS stock to dip hard), to satellites to compete with STARLINK (amazons internet will be faster), they make their own chips now, they have AWS (backbone of the web), they're involved in streaming video + music, audible, and of course the online retail.
  • Or if you want higher risk (you said you don't) throw it into DRAM or EWY (Korea ETF that includes 2 huge memory companies).

  • I stay invested but set up trailing stops (eg 20%) on my high flyers, in my play money account (a Roth), which is only 5-10% of my portfolio.
  • High flyers this year - SNDK, AMD, and MU.
  • Had STX but sold for big gains.

  • If you have a Fidelity or Schwab account you can get free counseling.
  • Diversify into something that isn't overlapping with them, like VTV or SPXT.
  • alternatively VT (world) or VXUS (companies outside the US) might be good too.
  • 3rd: Avoid individual companies initially.
  • Again, you can "fake buy" stocks with Fidelity and Schwab as well as access a plethora of their information online.
How yall MSFT holders doing? 1 0.9894 wallstreetbets

  • Like I've spent my 10 years of my life DCA into the stock market into the top 10 ETFs and then around 5 years ago moved to Fisher Investments (while keeping my own $100k portfolio so I could see if could "beat them") and they have consistently produced ridiculous 25% consistent returns.
  • But I missed out on Bitcoin, NVIDIA, AMD, all of these companies that have made people rich overnight and I finally got my moment with VCX.
  • But not only did I make a nice $250k from a $10k investment, I have a solid amount of restricted shares from only $50k that's worth $600k.
  • Now a LOT could change when the lockup period ends but I don't plan on selling any shares this year bc their tax implications would be more ridiculous than they already are for me, lol.
  • I plan on holding for a long time, especially now that Anthropic made that deal with SpaceX and VCX is most likely to double their exposure to SpaceX just like they doubled their OpenAI exposure.

  • To answer your broader question, it's a bad idea to try and time the market or invest in individual stocks unless you have a high level understanding of the business.
  • If you want to try it, sure go ahead and throw a few grand into it and hold for 5 years to see what happens.
  • Even the best hedge fund managers in the world with an entire team of Ivy League grads can't consistently outperform the S&P, so how do you think regular people like us are going to fare?
  • When you buy into the low cost index funds like VOO, VTI, SPY all the work is done for you and you just ride the overall market gains.

  • for a Fidelity account specifically, FXAIX is probably the cleanest call.
  • mutual fund structure means you invest exact dollar amounts with no bid-ask spread, and at 0.015% it's essentially free.
  • FSKAX is Fidelity's total market fund at the same cost if you want broader exposure beyond S&P 500.
  • both VOO and FXAIX track the 500 largest companies, so you're underweighting small and mid cap.
