US Port Strike by 45,000 Dockworkers Is All but Certain to Begin at Midnight 2024-10-01T01:47:51+00:00 36 wallstreetbets
  • They might reach a deal at 11:30PM or just after I buy puts with my luck.
  • Ultra Regard play #1: the docks could pre-order 45K Optimus' AI robots and replace all workers on strike.
  • Ultra regard play #2: Amazon deploys their own set of AI delivery drones to solve logistics issues caused with ships, rendering them irrelevant.
  • If they have a physical product or high demand for consumable supplies, it'll be affected.

Is Tech itself a snowball in terms of growth? 2024-04-25T23:15:52+00:00 24 stocks
  • In the past year, YouTube and Google search have become so ad-ridden it's starting to have a backlash on social media.
  • We still haven't seen a real recession, at this moment mainly due to deficit spending, so it's hard to say what would happen to tech earnings.
  • For instance, GOOGL has been criticized in the past for not not being shareholder friendly and not focusing on profits, but they were always able to just turn that switch.
  • In a free market, economic profits tend towards zero, and the only way to hold them high is a moat.
  • Companies like GOOGL, MSFT, AMZN, NVDA, perhaps AAPL, ADBE, and whoever else have had monopoly-like position for many years, but only recently have pushed earnings.

  • \*\* do **NOT** go long options unless you're doing it as part of a well considered leveraging strategy (i.e. LEAPs on a quality stock/growth story).
  • Largely because I work for an IB and have a holding period but also it has proven a winning income strategy for me.
  • Buy round lots of a legit stock (MSFT, AMZN, GOOGL, NVDA, etc) that actually makes money but also has a relatively high volatility.
  • If you sell an uncovered call your risk literally goes to infinity, theoretically speaking
  • 3. your calls are covered so you are not assuming any additional downside risk beyond being long the stock and holding those are generally considered safe investments

  • DO NOT let the dollar amount scare you.
  • Swing trading companies that makes products or services that everybody uses (AMD, AMZN, MSFT, etc).
  • When I was trading $100k and was up 1% in a day, or $1,000 I was pretty happy.
  • I buy shit that precipitously drops due to unknown reasons or the most ridiculous reasons (algos mainly).
  • Typically I target things down 3% in a day.

  • I think MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, anyone will have to go with AI competitors rather than wait several years for Nvidia chips.
  • I'm pretty sure from the last few quarterly earnings that Nvidia is having no issues whatsoever to sell their AI chips.
  • The desire is so huge even with China bans there's no slowdown in growth.
  • I'm not gonna bother googling it but their earnings report might've had a comment from their CEO talking about being sold out for years.
  • Its complaining that there needs to be an investigation because Nvidia (which I don't believe is famous for networking gear), is trying to strong arm ppl into buying their AI chips so they'll get a discount on their networking products?

The AI bubble bursting will be the catalyst for the incoming housing market crash. Here's why. 2024-05-13T07:27:59+00:00 124 wallstreetbets
  • The big hype names in AI aren't publicly traded, and the big publicly traded companies involved in AI are already raking in massive revenue.
  • The EV craze of circa 2020 was way dumber imho as every company that wasn't TSLA either had no path to profitability or they were just flat out fake.
  • In a couple years or more maybe the tide turns but that day is not today.
  • Those would all take a big hit if AI hardware sales dried up, but in the *current* environment all the buyers like GOOG, META, MSFT, AMZN would cut AI investment only after they've cut the rest of the company to the bone.
  • NVDA is not pets.com, nor is AVGO, MRVL, AMD, TSM etc.
You don't understand AI hype 2024-06-14T14:12:14+00:00 102 wallstreetbets
  • A few other clients have started dipping their toes in LLM use, but vastly prefer off the shelf models instead of using custom ones.
  • The repercussions of long term AI (after the bubble bursts and the wind settles) are as you explained profound, not just to the markets but the human society as a whole.
  • Companies like NVDA, MSFT, AMZN, digital ocean, Anthropic, Mistral, etc are the ones who will reap the immediate benefits from PaaS revenue when ML engineers use their APIs.
  • What's interesting is that there are now moves to limit and control AI development from various different stakeholders; Governments and Legislators, those who own the Data (aka Financial Times, Reddit, etc) and of course Ethics committees.
  • If you asked me five years ago if I ever though we'd see AGI in our lifetimes, back when deep learning was in its infancy I would have said probably not.
What do you guys think of NVIDIA earnings? 2024-02-10T01:17:56+00:00 102 wallstreetbets
  • I think most people don't know how to read an ER or factor in guidance.
  • But because stock went up fast, people assume it must be a bubble
  • You mention they only did $27B revenue last year and must be overvalued, but ignore that they're expected to do $20B revenue and $10B+ profit just in Q4.
  • For the upcoming full year, analysts expect ~$95B revenue and $40B net profit.
  • They're literally sitting at a better forward PE than MSFT, NFLX or AMZN.

  • Idk about individual stocks - if you've got access to index funds, that's where I've had a ton of success.
  • I'll hold them for another 25 years until I retire but I no longer buy individual stocks.
  • I just buy on automatic recurring intervals every two weeks and let it ride over a 40 year span.
  • I used to pick individual stocks but I've been way more successful over the last 15 years with broad market index funds.
  • I am continuing to hold some individual stocks that I was buying on similar recurring intervals from 2008-2016 though - AMZN, WMT, GOOG, BRK.B, KO, GS, AXON, CRM, and CAT.

  • Moreover, Vale's balance sheet is very strong (16.5B net debt), with its required payouts from past environmental disasters (Brumadinho, Samarco, dam decharacterization) getting pushed out many years into the future.
  • Moreover, I'm a very cautious investor so I happily accept the costs of diversification and prefer it to being US only and then attempting to time the markets by going in and out of cash.
  • And Vale is one of the lowest cost operators in the world (expected to fall over time in nominal terms!

  • I'm still adding to my position because it is still the best company to invest in moving forward, imo.
  • I put the majority of my money into ETF's and mutual funds, but for individual companies, AMZN is not to be ignored.

  • I wanted to buy NVR, POOL and OXY but figured itd best to just buy BRK.B that holds those assets.

  • I just sold a lot of BN and VOO to buy my other positions and get some cash on the side.
