Are daytraders still profitable in today's economy?

Yeah. I trade BB reversions on ES and BTC on the 30min. When price closes outside the bands, I draw a fib from the high to the low of that candle. If price reverts back to the 0.618 level of that candle, that's my entry, with my stop at the candle's low. If there's a further close outside the bands before I get filled, that new candle becomes my fib reference and I take the 0.618 off that one instead, as long as the following candle still closes outside the bands. 2 losses max per day. VIX needs to be above 18 (this threshold shifts year to year, but I'm basically checking based off the major S/R level on the VIX daily). Longs only above the 200SMA, shorts only below. On both assets I use the 20/2 BB and the 30/2 BB Hope that makes sense!

  • You need to take a step back from doing brute force backtesting on random shit and understand what an edge actually is.
  • The obvious ones based on latency aren't for you, but there may be some bread crumbs between options and stocks/futures in some specific cases around earnings.
  • There are some specific examples of edges that work when you are offering value to the market by balancing out the imbalance between order types, etc.
  • You can fool yourself and cherry pick instruments that historically only go straight up, and use indicators to get rid of some of worst downturns, but you are basically just an investor timing the market at that point.
  • If I were you I would throw away the notion that you will find basic indicator based edges on the most difficult instruments in existance (NQ,MNQ, ES, MES) These are the definition of nearly perfectly efficient markets.

  • The only way I can think of is regime detection as a discretionary trader and making big bets with scaling-in when you feel sure about an incoming trade chance.
  • I tried many 100s of studies claiming Sharpe 2 to over 6 in intraday ES and NQ and they were just curve fitted and completey unrealistic after realistic trading cost.
  • And the HFT execution game you can forgot as a normal trader.
  • There might be some very thin and speedy arbitrage games between stocks and index futures, ETFs and index options etc., you cannot compete with.

  • It's refined and iterated beyond belief and I know for a fact that it is profitable in long run.
  • My strategy only made sense when I moved to ES.
  • It does not perform nearly as good in NQ due to thinner liquidity.
  • My strategy loses half the time.
  • BUT the loses are minuscule and the wins are huge.

  • You are correct, finding an consistently exploitable edge when the market is trading normally (ie efficiently) is essentially impossible.
  • You need to focus on moments where it becomes inefficient.
  • Examples are news like CPI or the daily market open.
  • My algo for instance, exploits latency arbitrage on ES during the market open which works very well.
  • But yes, experience great results during normal market hours is very difficult.

Would you go live? 2 0.9813 algotrading

It depends on a few details. Ive been doing automated trading with ironbeam. I use my own servers ...

  • The backtesting was with a python program with all the same logic and on raw ES data gpimg back to 2008.
  • The api data isnt squeezed or crimped, its raw, so rhe highs and lows were different than on TV.
  • Id say if you've gone two weeks and its identical to your backtesting, and its the same way youll do it live, than yes, but, be smart and keep risk as low as you can until confirmed.
  • I got lazy on risk and over confident and burned a bit of money on errors and experiments, as well too many contacts off the bat before all edge cases were worked out.
  • So if you can use a demo account with your broker using their prices, that would be ideal otherwise use micro contracts to start live to reduce the risk, even ad tempting as it'd be to push hard on minis.

  • Would suggest that this could be a strong regime-specific edge or subtle overfitting to recent high vol conditions.
  • This for ex, shows strong regime dependency on choppy high vol uptrending days.
  • Keep in mind, the edge can vanish or reverse when volatility drops, or strong trends take over.
  • Before using real money run walk forward testing, Monte Carlo with extra slippage, breakdowns by VIX and FOMC days, and sensitivity checks on your stop and target levels.

  • No offense but ES vs NQ seems like something you'd determine long ago.
  • I use my own cash account and I've been trading 2 ES but last week my performance got to me mentally so I've been trading 2 MES this week.
  • With the lower stress, I've been absolutely killing it this week.
  • My plan is to build my confidence back and then slowly increment up to the equivalent of 2 ES before moving back over from MES.
  • Knowing that you're trading 3 accounts could mean that mental stress is x3 and worse for you.

  • The stats on paper are genuinely impressive, 1.719 Sharpe, 15.69% max drawdown and a profit factor of 1.882 with consistent monthly performance is a solid foundation.
  • Jan to April on a single ES contract doesn't capture enough market regimes, you haven't seen this strategy face a genuine prolonged bear, a liquidity crisis or a flash crash event.
  • Slippage, commission modelling and look-ahead bias can all flatter results significantly on a platform like TV, especially on futures.
  • 347 trades over 4 months on one contract is a reasonable sample but I'd want to see how the win rate holds up when you push it further.
  • Personally I'd paper trade it live for another 2-3 months across different conditions before touching real capital.

  • When I get rocked by a bad wave, I take the time to learn and assess the development of my trade.
  • In essence, accepting trades that are not good.
  • Allowing good trades to run.
  • Practice the habits of letting go of bad trades quickly and staying with the good trades.
  • There is no "edge" in any of the above, it's understanding my ability to position myself, take risk and manage that risk.

I'll give you one for free. It's called the "power bar play". Here is the setup: - Add a 20 SMA a...

  • The 2m "power bar" must be originate from one of those small consolidation zones as the 20 SMA is getting really close.
  • Ideally you want to set just before the next obvious resistance zone, like at the base of the top wick of the nearest swing high.
  • Some people will let huge momentum moves just keep running until price crosses the 20 SMA again.
  • If you're getting something bigger than 2.5 ATR or whatever, chances are good that the main part of the move has already played out, and a huge bar like that will give you a pretty bad R/R.
  • There are plenty of other factors to consider to help refine this setup, but this genuinely works if you can stay disciplined and develop that sense for what a "clean trade" looks like.
For a non-trader, how do I get started with trading? 1 0.787 Daytrading

Biggest thing I wish someone told me at 21....don't spend money on courses yet. Everything you need ...

  • The trap most beginners fall into is jumping straight to strategy videos on YouTube and trying to trade a setup they saw someone else use.
  • When you're ready for actual learning, read "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas.
  • Not for strategy but for understanding why your brain will fight you once real money is involved.
  • The goal isn't profit, it's learning how differently you behave when real money is on the line.
