The other thing is that entry barriers are huge to produce DRAM that is good by modern standards. i.e. not wanting to produce what was leading-edge in 2018 but terrible now. Assuming prices stay high enough to justify the capex, then we might see in a few years more Chinese companies trying to enter the market. Even then, companies like CXMT are focused mostly on consumer RAM, since Micron left a huge void in that market.

  • As with any nascent market with massive spend you need to keep track of the adjacencies (power, networking, storage, compute) and monitor the benchmarks.
  • Expect this to go wide then narrow back as the inevitable shake out/acquisition cycles occur.
  • The capital being spent in this market is so huge and the solutions so defining that like the internet there is no turning back.

  • Even still, the numbers make no sense.
  • Let's imagine they can sell as much RAM as they can make.
  • Wanna guess by what percentage they can actually and realistically increase their production by within a 5 year window?
  • Sure with the high demand and the low supply, they can charge a higher premium and probably jack up profits a bit more than 2x.

  • MU takes up a large position of my portfolio as well but I have not sold shares since it got to 550 and have been adding more during dips, but I do close my MU calls often.
  • They really emphasized that they signed 16 SCAs (strategy customers agreements) that typically last til 2030, reserving up to 20% of their DRAM volume and 1/3 of their NAND volume in their earning calls.
  • Really bullish stuff since most of these agreements are take or pay agreements with a binding commitment to purchase a specific volume over the term as well.

  • There's extremely limited fab production capacity and adding more fabs takes a huge investment and a significant amount of time.
  • So growth is basically capped right now as there's no way to fulfill the insatiable demand.
  • They have raised prices and that's boosted margins but it's not real growth and big consumers of RAM will lock in long term deals basically eliminating price increases as a play going forward.
  • The market wants to see incredible growth, but they're handicapped right now.

  • Look at the debt the hyperscaalers have, think about the fact that their raw materials (compute, storage, ram, energy) are all increasing in prices by orders of magnitude plus some.
  • To absorb their input costs, they are going to have to raise product prices significantly which will immediately negatively impact revenue as customers cut back on demand.
  • That is going to push the hyperscalers to have to raise product prices further as the cost to run the infrastructure is not going down, ever.
  • The hyperscalers replace hardware on a five year cycle, that means 2021 servers are being replaced right now with hardware that is going to cost significantly more than it did in 2021.
  • There is no end in sight for price increases, even up 400% demand for RAM has not fallen off a cliff, it's sold out through at least the end of 2027.

  • Last week: was a consolidating week of trimming profits, rotating from multiple "hold profit" buckets into one bucket (sold all positions in SPXL, QQXL, TQQQ to put into SGRT), shedding some dead money from UGL (small loss but maybe I make that back by rotating into something more positive trending), watched SPCH come back down so I shed that as well.
  • This week: I guess Israel is messing up the peace agreement again so I'm bracing for a red start to the week.
